If you mostly read books via Kindle or another e-reader, do yourself a favor and borrow or buy the printed version of this one. I was so glad I made the investment to enjoy the power of how Bechdel's illustrations told as much of the story as her words. While this wasn't perhaps as good as I had expected it to be, it still is powerful, and I'll remember it for some time to come.

Once I start a book, I have a hard time stopping and just don't want to get myself where I can't get out and it's too late. I can’t really say I enjoyed this book — I found it dark and disturbing in many ways. I think I read it pretty much straight through. I'm a herosexual males, and picked up this book, after reading an article Bout how the right-wing states banned it from libraries. Excellent read, and though I'm hetero, I get the dysfunction. By essentially putting her father's homosexuality and pedophilia in the same category, this author is perpetuating EXTREMELY harmful and negative stereotypes about gay men.

Even without considering the graphic element, the writing is labored verging on tortured. The narration consists of endless confused comparisons of her family's situation to classic literature. I don't object to allusions when they are deployed to refine the writer's own vision of the narrative. But Bechdel's dependence on literary allusions don't feel like attempts to illuminate -- they obscure; they waffle about for a few pages a time before being replaced about by other thin allusions.

And the story itself, the misery and the humor of the characters, the events, and the time period, must be thoughtfully digested. The book is divided into seven chapters, each based on a different theme in the author's childhood and young adult life. Before my to psychobabble gets the better of my good sense, let me come clean about my personal reasons for rating this work as high as 3.5 stars.

Current book

This is clearly an adult book, and not a comic book in any sense of the word. It’s similar in style and substance to books like “House of Happy Endings” by Leslie Garis and “Running with Scissors” by Augusten Burroughs, and would appeal to the same audience, but I thought this story was enhanced by the visual presentation. I particularly liked the little snippets of letters and envelopes and photographs…they just made this story feel real to me.

It’s all clever and interesting stuff and is well written. The potential destruction the father could have worked on the daughter by living might be read in the baroque level of detail this graphic novel has, despite being authored and illustrated by a self-professed modern minimalist. Instead of spare lines and empty spaces Allison Bechdel fills her book with the gingerbread latticing, velvet flocked wall-paper and intricately carved bannisters of her father's pretentious Victorian tastes. But it's not clear how much credit we are to give to this narration, and how much the point of the narrative is to expose its own tenuousness.

The Secret to Superman Strength is her third graphic memoir. Alison Bechdel has been a careful archivist of her own life and kept a journal since she was ten. Since 1983 she has been chronicling the lives of various characters in the fictionalized Dykes to Watch Out For strip, "one of the preeminent oeuvres in the comics genre, period" (Ms.). The strip is syndicated in 50 alternative newspapers, translated into multiple languages, and collected into a book series with a quarter of a million copies in print. Utne magazine has listed DTWOF as "one of the greatest hits of the twentieth century."

Due to this, I actually find myself a little bit distracted, over-examining many of the frames in order to try to parse just why this story needed illustrating. I did that a lot in this book too, and while I didn't come to a clear answer, I did find many frames that were not just augmented, but wholly changed, for the better of course, by the compliment of the illustration. In this groundbreaking, bestselling graphic memoir, Alison Bechdel charts her fraught relationship with her late father. In her hands, personal history becomes a work of amazing subtlety and power, written with controlled force and enlivened with humor, rich literary allusion, and heartbreaking detail. In fact, this whole book is an attempt by the author to explain her troubled relationship with her family and society in general through epoch-making novels - mainly The Great Gatsby, In Search of Lost Time and Ulysses.

You see, I'm not really a fan of graphic novels, but it worked here to illustrate her points. However, this whole book felt more like a project of self-analysis than a commercial product. It was extremely personal, yet cold and detached--like Alison's parents, which I think is the entire point. My rating and review are thus reprehensibly subjective.

Alison can also make the most simplistic details - Road Runner on the TV; period cars; recurring appearances of the Sun Beam Bread logo - realistic, melancholy, and heartrending all at once. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Alison ends the story with an image of her jumping off a diving board into a pool as a young girl, with Bruce there to catch her. Alison narrates that Icarus—and Bruce—did hurtle into the sea, but Bruce “was there to catch” Alison when she leapt. Shortly before Bruce’s death, Alison narrates that she had an eerie dream in which the two of them try to view a sunset but Bruce, lagging behind, misses it.

It delves into imperfect parents, fluid sexuality, and the messy quality of the human psyche overall. It serves as one of the most standout books on the college syllabi given to me thus far. A graphic novel memoir about a girl who grows up with a repressed, homosexual father and later comes out as a lesbian, only to have her dad die a few days later - how different.

At Bruce’s funeral, Alison becomes irritable and wishes she could speak the truth about Bruce’s death, but instead keeps quiet. Alison wonders what might have happened if Bruce had been able to escape Beech Creek and live someplace else. She discusses the landscape around Beech Creek, which is both naturally beautiful and industrially polluted. As a young girl, Alison decided to write a poem about nature, and Bruce added a stanza onto it.

I did like how something that Alison Bechdel mentioned in the first half would then get completed in the second half. And I learned quite a lot about funerals, which I was not expecting going into this. Also, Bechdel taking the time to discuss her OCD was crucial and enlightening. I'm sorry Ms Bechdel but if this is your attempt at cracking a joke on the likelihood of your gay self having a conversation with your gay dad about well being gay, it's kind of pathetic.

So much so, there could be several individual books written on any 'one' theme. Everyone, especially daughter and father, have their problems with gender roles stereotypes they can´t live because she is a tomboy and he a feminine man. As if parent child relationships weren´t already difficult enough, this adds an underlying criticism and satire to the values a society wants to implement into all citizens. That said, you're more likely to enjoy it if you're a recovering English major. Or if you're a fan of queer culture, autobiographical fiction, or non-superhero graphic novels.

Having lost a father at 14, I know how it feels trying to grasp at straws, trying to analyze one seemingly inconsequential incident or subjecting one precious shared moment to intense and concentrated scrutiny from all possible angles. But you know it's just delusional thinking anyway. You will never know him the way you could have.

Her father's death was ruled an accident -- he stumbled into oncoming traffic while clearing a lot. Even if the death was willed, the narrator herself provides plenty of evidence for other constructions of what could have caused the suicide. A man whose rage for order verged on Mommy Dearest, the father clearly suffered from a mood disorder, narcissism, and even a tendency to kleptomania -- none of which are endemic to homosexuality, even of the closeted sort. The man was unpleasant, clearly disturbed and distraught by his wife's recent request for a divorce. I'm looking forward to reading Bechdel’s newest graphic book, Are You My Mother, the story of her relationship with her mother. The book was published when Bechdel was in her mid-40s, and tells the story of her own life, up to just before her twentieth birthday, and her father’s life, up to the same point in time, when he was run over by a truck - possibly accidentally, possibly as a suicide.

Later, in a similar incident, Alison was drawing in a coloring book when Bruce got upset that she was using the wrong color, causing him to take over and shade it in for her. Lived in the same building as the funeral home, and Alison and her brothers would often stay over and force Grandma to tell the same story over and over, about a toddler-aged Bruce getting stuck in the mud and being rescued by a mailman. Later, while standing over Bruce’s grave, Alison has trouble believing her father is really down there, though she knows deep down that he’s “stuck in the mud…” permanently. Alison then reveals that Bruce killed himself while she was in college, and though he lived through most of her childhood, she and the rest of the family felt his absence long before he was physically gone.

The same thirds layout appears again and again . She eschews texture, and almost exclusively uses a light-grey tone out of the range of black and white. Her compositions similarly fail to employ white or negative space, and the final product feels impossibly bland. It was emotionally engaging without being maudlin. It shared an experience with me that I never would have gained anywhere else.

And then that the only panel that isn't infected with shadows is the middle one with the girl Tohru. Tohru of course knows nothing of this past event, instead she looks only to the right, because she is only privy to the present. She interrupts the composition of the page as possible savior, a third party who can interrupt Yuki's descent into the past.

2012: Fun Home by Alison Bechdel

The coldness of her family home was palpable and mirrored that of the funeral home where her father worked. Other than being indentured servants to their father’s fastidious home decor projects, there were no signs of outright abuse, but the lack of affection would be enough to cause any child psychological problems. It would have been easy for Bechdel to paint her father as the patriarchal tyrant, but she manages to make him somewhat sympathetic. Her ability to find humor in an otherwise grim story and her wonderful artwork kept me wanting to read more. Bechdel has been named a MacArthur Fellow and Cartoonist Laureate of Vermont, among many other honors.

In the end, I was compelled to pick up Fun Home completely on a whim. Though I flew through it, a lot of the literary references went shamefully over my head. And considering that it was such a big focus here, I was left out of the loop a lot, which ended up lowering my enjoyment while reading. Unlike Bruce Bechdel who grappled with the stark contradiction between his public reality and private urges all his life, my father didn't particularly have any skeletons in his closet. And even if he did I have no way of unraveling that mystery now.

She clearly thinks quite deeply about culture and literature and whatnot, and this might actually be how her brain works. But as a reader, it feels like a long way to go to tie two things together that don't need to be tied together in the first place. And while the book is very reflective, it doesn't feel self-aware in a way of "I know it sounds ridiculous, but here's what I thought of..." Or, "Cut me some slack. I was in college." One's eye is immediately drawn to the dark corner in the middle of the page, in which a child cowers. This is the convergance of lines of the corner itself , the simple negative space, and the eyeline of the character on the far right . This is a fearful image, full of crossing lines, and dark shodows.

When Alison comes out as homosexual herself in late adolescence, the denouement is swift, graphic, and redemptive. This is a great book that presents family dynamics. Each and everybody of them has their own little bubble to enjoy whenever they see that it's not going well. If you get the chance to read this, I also recommend reading " Are you my mother" wrote by the same author. The way in which Bechdel retells, in each chapter of the book, with continually increasing detail, shifting themes, and changing perspectives, the story of her relationship with her father, and the way in which she learned more about the events preceding his death. I'm not going to say that I think Bechdel is being disingenuous.

When Alison comes out as homosexual herself in late adolescense, the denouement is swift, graphic -- and redemptive. I almost never read graphic novels, and I did not expect the psychological tour de force of Fun Home at all. Through detailed and impressive graphics Bechdel delineates her coming of age, a journey filled with uncomfortable experiences and nuanced life lessons. The amount of retrieval and introspection this work must have required of her amazes me.

There's so much left that I didn't talk about yet, but I suppose it won't do any good to say much more. This book is an absolutely astonishing delight, and if I haven't convinced you of that yet, I'm not going to bother trying anymore. I know that Fun Home isn't designed to make me happy. I'm cool with experiences that aren't as fun as being drunk on a rollercoaster.

Alison also compares Bruce to Marcel Proust in the way they intermingled their lives with fiction in order to conceal their homosexual proclivities, as well as their mutual obsession with the beauty of flowers. A smart and thoughtful reflection on the many places where the author's life paralleled her father's. I was most surprised by how generous she was to her father's memory -- maybe too generous, in my opinion. Because the author has no distance from the subject at hand, the reader is free to draw their own conclusions more so than in a piece of fiction. This breakout book by Alison Bechdel takes its place alongside the unnerving, memorable, darkly funny family memoirs of Augusten Burroughs and Mary Karr. It's a father-daughter tale pitch-perfectly illustrated with Bechdel's sweetly gothic drawings and — like Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis — a story exhilaratingly suited to the graphic memoir form.

In Fun Home Bechdel illustrates and writes about living in a dysfunctional, Victorian house, and she includes an abundance of literary references within a nonlinear format. But she focuses this seven-year effort on her father, a man who displays enough complexity to evoke sympathy despite his darker sides. Alison Bechdel's art and narrative are fantastic, with layer upon layer of meaning rarely seen in a comic book. The interspersion of literary passages, historical and geographical allusions and personal memoirs is done with consummate mastery, so that the main theme of the book is always in the limelight. And the panels are drawn with a lot of thought given to the exact layout so that the pictures enhance the flow of the narrative seamlessly. I went out and bought this book immediately after hearing a paper on it at a recent conference.

Alison’s mother Helen was equally obsessive in her own artistic pursuits, which mostly concerned her acting in community theater plays. The house, then, felt to Alison like an artists’ colony, with each member of the family compulsively absorbed in his or her own pursuits. Alison discusses the evolution of her O.C.D., which entered her diary first in the form of self-doubt, such that she would write, “I think” between each declarative statement. It then got so bad that she would scribble “I think” over each entry, causing Helen to take Alison’s diary away until Alison decided to break her compulsions, which she eventually did. Elizabeth – I agree this book wasn’t necessarily enjoyable, but I didn’t want to put it down either.

Practically the only thing that stands out is the dark porch of the house, which forms stripes with its columns -- but it's basically being crowded out by a huge text book even in its own panel! The next negative space to draw the eye is the window behind the ivy in the bottom left hand corner, which is again misleading, because the text indicates should be looking at the flower in the foreground, not at the black background. In this graphic memoir, Alison Bechdel charts her fraught relationship with her late father. This graphic memoir has been on my to read list for what feels like ages, so I felt entirely satisfied when I completed reading it. Allison offers elegant prose - pleasure - intelligence- and compassion-- through literary references....reflecting on classics read that both she and her dad enjoyed .

But we would never discuss our shared predilection again. 1-star review is because, for me, it's 1 star. I'm not a pro reviewer or anything, and I don't feel responsible to rate something as I imagine it would be rated by the general public. Nor is that a worthwhile exercise because you can see the average rating, so go with that. "Joan was not just a visionary and activist, but a bona fide cyclops...she'd lost one eye in a childhood accident vividly reminiscent of the way Odysseus blinded Polyphemus." Note the figurative black cloud hanging over Akito on the far right, that comes to infect the rest of the page as well.

And maybe what's most fascinating about her attempts to identify her homosexuality to her father's sexual life is all of the possible identifications she has to shut down to get there. Identifying with her father means she doesn't have to identify with the teenage boys he exploited, placing his desires before their autonomy. Naming her coming out of the closet as the catalyst for her father's death removes blame from her mother, whose request for divorce might otherwise provide a suicide motive. At the same time it erases the possibility that coming out of the closet prompted her mother to ask for the divorce, moved to escape a sham marriage by her own daughter's unwillingness to play along with convention.

Distant and exacting, Bruce Bechdel was an English teacher and director of the town funeral home, which Alison and her family referred to as the Fun Home. It was not until college that Alison, who had recently come out as a lesbian, discovered that her father was also gay. A few weeks after this revelation, he was dead, leaving a legacy of mystery for his daughter to resolve. Alison then wonders about how her own coming out of the closet might have impacted Bruce’s suicide. Four months before, after realizing she was a lesbian by reading about homosexuals in a library book, Alison had written her parents a letter in which she came out. Alison notes how books were just as important to Bruce’s intellectual development as her own, and she delves into his youthful obsession with F.

But what I do have in common with Bechdel's perspective on her father, is this perplexity, subliminal resentment and an amused incredulity about his life and his deeds. How can he be just a person existing in the past tense now? At least she must have achieved some kind of closure through the creation of this part graphic memoir part literary essay on remembering a loved one. Alison Bechdel’s coming of age tale is a difficult one. It was easy to sympathize with young Alison who must have been like a ship lost at sea.

All Kinds of Lives

Fun Home is both a daughter's efforts to make sense of her father's life and death as it is an account of growing up uncomfortable in your own skin, of knowing you are different but being afraid of acknowledging it for fear everything might change, even though it should. It's a story of coming to terms with who you are, while remembering a man who really never had that luxury. When Alison was in college, she came out to her parents as a lesbian.

In the book, Bechdel analyzes her memories, experiences and extant documents, and uses literature to try to understand her father and tell a story about her family and about herself. Through narrative that is alternately heartbreaking and fiercely funny, we are drawn into a daughter's complex yearning for her father. And yet, apart from assigned stints dusting caskets at the family-owned "fun home," as Alison and her brothers call it, the relationship achieves its most intimate expression through the shared code of books.

I know it's not the father, because his hobbies are rendered with no particular attention to detail (again, the scribble-flowers), but there's nothing to visually indicate it's one of the children either. The size and overwhelming green-ness of the giant left panel immediately draw my eye. And the lines of the horizon and the trees bring my eye up and impart a sense of awe.
